The Everest Renjo La Pass Trek with Gokyo Lakes is one of the most rewarding high-altitude adventures in the Everest region of Nepal. This spectacular journey combines beautiful Sherpa villages, peaceful mountain trails, turquoise glacial lakes, dramatic Himalayan scenery, ancient monasteries, and the challenging crossing of Renjo La Pass.

Unlike the Everest Three High Passes Trek, which involves crossing three demanding mountain passes, the Renjo La Pass Trek focuses on one spectacular high pass while allowing trekkers to experience the extraordinary Gokyo Valley and its famous lakes. It is therefore an excellent choice for travelers who want a challenging Everest-region trek without committing to the longer and more demanding Three Passes route.

The journey takes you through the famous Sagarmatha National Park, home to some of the world's highest mountains. Along the trail, you can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Thamserku, Island Peak, and many other Himalayan peaks.

One of the greatest attractions of this adventure is the Gokyo Valley. The valley contains a series of beautiful glacial lakes surrounded by enormous mountains and the Ngozumpa Glacier. The hike to Gokyo Ri provides one of the finest panoramic viewpoints in the Everest region.

The final major adventure is the crossing of Renjo La Pass, located at approximately 5,360 meters above sea level. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy an extraordinary Himalayan panorama extending toward Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the surrounding peaks.

At Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks, we provide flexible trekking arrangements according to your group size, budget, preferred transportation, and guide requirements. You can join our standard package, travel privately with a guide, or customize transportation and trekking services according to your needs.

Why Choose the Renjo La Pass Trek?

The Everest region has several famous trekking routes, but the Renjo La Pass route offers a particularly attractive combination of mountain scenery, culture, lakes, and adventure.

Many trekkers know the Everest Base Camp trail, but the Gokyo and Renjo La route provides a different perspective of the Everest landscape. After reaching Namche Bazaar, the trail eventually leaves the main Everest Base Camp route and climbs toward the peaceful Gokyo Valley.

The landscape changes dramatically as you gain elevation. Dense forests gradually disappear and are replaced by alpine meadows, rocky mountainsides, glacial streams, and snow-covered peaks.

The Gokyo Lakes are among the most beautiful natural attractions in the Everest region. Their deep blue and turquoise colors contrast beautifully with the surrounding mountains.

After exploring Gokyo, the trail climbs toward Renjo La Pass. The pass is the major physical challenge of the journey, but reaching its summit provides an unforgettable reward.

For trekkers looking for a combination of high-altitude adventure, Himalayan scenery, Sherpa culture, and quieter trails, Renjo La Pass Trek is an excellent choice.

Renjo La Pass Trek Itinerary – 13 Days

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu – 1,350 m

Welcome to Nepal.

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, a representative from Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel.

After checking in, you can rest and recover from your international journey.

Depending on your arrival time, we can organize a trekking briefing. Your guide can explain the route, accommodation, altitude, weather, equipment, and general safety considerations.

If you have not already arranged your trekking equipment, Kathmandu has many shops where you can rent or purchase trekking gear.

Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Kathmandu/Ramechhap to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

Your Everest adventure begins with a flight toward Lukla.

Depending on the operating season and flight arrangements, flights may operate from Kathmandu or Ramechhap. Flight schedules can change because of weather, airport operations, and seasonal arrangements.

The flight offers an exciting introduction to the Himalayan landscape.

After landing at Lukla, you meet the trekking crew and begin walking toward Phakding.

The trail passes through small settlements, forests, bridges, and sections of the Dudh Koshi River valley.

Phakding is a pleasant village and an ideal location for your first night in the Everest region.

Overnight in Phakding.

Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar

After breakfast, continue toward Namche Bazaar.

The trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley and crosses several suspension bridges. You gradually enter Sagarmatha National Park and continue toward the famous mountain town of Namche.

The final section climbs more steeply toward Namche Bazaar.

Namche is one of the most important settlements in the Khumbu region. It serves as a trading center and a major acclimatization stop for trekkers and climbers.

You can find teahouses, restaurants, bakeries, shops, trekking equipment stores, communication facilities, and other services in Namche.

Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

Today is an important acclimatization day.

Rather than remaining completely inactive, you take a short hike around Namche. A popular option is the hike toward Hotel Everest View.

From higher viewpoints, you can enjoy impressive views of the Himalayan landscape.

Acclimatization allows your body to gradually adjust to increasing elevation.

Your guide will help you maintain a comfortable pace and explain the importance of hydration, nutrition, rest, and recognizing symptoms of altitude-related illness.

After the hike, return to Namche and enjoy the afternoon.

Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5: Namche Bazaar to Dole

Today the trek begins to move away from the main Everest Base Camp route.

The trail climbs above Namche and follows a beautiful mountain path through forests and open landscapes.

You may see rhododendron, pine, and juniper vegetation along the lower portions of the route.

As you gain elevation, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse.

The views of mountains such as Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and other Khumbu peaks become increasingly impressive.

Eventually, you reach Dole, a small mountain settlement surrounded by dramatic landscapes.

Overnight in Dole.

Day 6: Dole to Machhermo

The trail continues toward Machhermo.

Today's landscape is more alpine. The path climbs gradually through open valleys and rocky terrain.

As you walk higher, the mountains become more dominant.

Machhermo is an important stopping point before entering the Gokyo Valley.

The settlement is associated with the famous Yeti stories of the Khumbu region, and local traditions have contributed to the fascinating cultural character of the area.

Your guide can explain the local history and legends while you enjoy the mountain scenery.

Overnight in Machhermo.

Day 7: Machhermo to Gokyo Village

Today is one of the most beautiful days of the trek.

The trail continues toward the Gokyo Valley.

You walk through an increasingly rugged alpine environment, eventually reaching the area of the Ngozumpa Glacier.

The Ngozumpa Glacier is the largest glacier in Nepal and is one of the most remarkable geographical features in the Gokyo region.

The route passes glacial moraine terrain before reaching the Gokyo Lakes.

The brilliant blue and turquoise water of the lakes provides a spectacular contrast to the surrounding rocky mountains.

Gokyo village lies beside the third Gokyo Lake and is surrounded by magnificent Himalayan peaks.

After reaching Gokyo, take time to relax and enjoy the extraordinary scenery.

Overnight in Gokyo.

Day 8: Acclimatization and Hike to Gokyo Ri

Today is another important acclimatization and exploration day.

The major activity is the hike toward Gokyo Ri, one of the most famous viewpoints in the Everest region.

The climb can be physically demanding because of the altitude, but the views from the upper viewpoint are exceptional.

From Gokyo Ri, you can see a broad panorama of Himalayan peaks, including Everest and other giants of the Khumbu and surrounding regions.

The Gokyo Lakes can also be viewed from above, creating one of the most memorable landscapes of the entire trek.

After spending time enjoying the views, descend carefully to Gokyo village.

The remainder of the day can be used for rest and preparation for the Renjo La crossing.

Overnight in Gokyo.

Day 9: Gokyo to Lungden via Renjo La Pass – approximately 5,360 m

Today is the major adventure of the trek.

You start early because crossing Renjo La Pass is a long and demanding day.

The trail climbs gradually at first before becoming steeper as you approach the pass.

The high altitude makes the ascent physically challenging, so maintaining a steady pace is important.

Renjo La Pass is situated at approximately 5,360 meters.

Reaching the top is a major achievement.

From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains. On a clear day, the panorama includes Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and numerous other peaks.

After enjoying the views and taking photographs, begin the descent toward the other side of the pass.

The landscape changes as you move toward the Lungden Valley.

Eventually, you reach Lungden, where you can rest after one of the most challenging days of the trek.

Overnight in Lungden.

Day 10: Lungden to Namche Bazaar

After the demanding Renjo La crossing, today's route gradually descends toward Namche Bazaar.

The trail passes through traditional settlements and landscapes associated with the Sherpa people.

Depending on the route and conditions, you may pass through or near villages such as Thame.

Thame is historically significant and is associated with mountaineering and traditional Himalayan trade routes.

The descent provides an opportunity to enjoy the changing scenery and recover from the high-altitude portion of the trek.

Eventually, you reach Namche Bazaar.

Enjoy a comfortable evening in the lively mountain town.

Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Today you begin the final trekking section.

The trail descends through forests and follows the Dudh Koshi River valley.

You cross suspension bridges and pass through villages that you encountered earlier in the journey.

The trail eventually reaches Lukla.

After arriving in Lukla, celebrate the completion of your Renjo La Pass adventure with your trekking team.

Your final night in the Khumbu region provides an opportunity to reflect on the journey through Gokyo Valley and across Renjo La.

Overnight in Lukla.

Day 12: Lukla Flight to Kathmandu/Ramechhap

After breakfast, prepare for your return flight.

Depending on the current flight schedule, you may fly from Lukla to Kathmandu or to Ramechhap, followed by transportation to Kathmandu.

Mountain flights are weather-dependent, so some flexibility is important.

Once you arrive in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a well-earned rest.

You can spend the afternoon exploring Kathmandu, shopping for souvenirs, visiting local attractions, or simply relaxing.

Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 13: Final Departure

Your Himalayan adventure comes to an end today.

A representative from Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks can transfer you to the airport according to your international flight schedule.

We hope the mountains, Sherpa villages, Gokyo Lakes, and Renjo La Pass have provided unforgettable memories.

We look forward to welcoming you again for another adventure in Nepal.

Optional Kathmandu to Surke Jeep Transportation

Travelers who want an alternative to flying to Lukla can consider the road option toward Surke.

For a private jeep carrying approximately 5–7 people, the Kathmandu-to-Surke transportation cost is approximately US$450 per jeep.

For individual travelers or smaller groups, a sharing jeep generally costs around US$50–70 per person, depending on availability and current transportation conditions.

This option can be useful for travelers who prefer road transportation or want to avoid the uncertainty associated with mountain flights.

However, road travel takes considerably longer than flying, and road conditions can vary. The journey should therefore be planned with sufficient time and flexibility.

Our team can advise you about the most practical transportation arrangement for your departure date.

Renjo La Pass Trek Difficulty

The Renjo La Pass Trek is considered a challenging high-altitude trek.

It does not require technical mountaineering skills under normal conditions, but trekkers must be prepared for long walking days, steep ascents, high elevation, cold temperatures, and changing mountain weather.

The crossing of Renjo La is the most demanding section.

Altitude is also an important consideration. The trek reaches more than 5,000 meters, where the air contains significantly less oxygen than at sea level.

Previous trekking experience at altitude is helpful, but good preparation, gradual acclimatization, a sensible pace, and appropriate guidance are equally important.

The key is not to rush.

Physical Preparation for Renjo La Pass

You should begin preparing several weeks before your trek.

Useful preparation includes:

  • Regular walking and hiking
  • Uphill and downhill walking
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Stair climbing
  • General strength training
  • Longer weekend hikes
  • Practicing with a backpack
  • Building endurance gradually

You do not need to become an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on consecutive days.

Mental preparation is equally important. High-altitude trekking can be tiring, and weather conditions may change unexpectedly.

A positive attitude, patience, and willingness to follow your guide's advice can make the experience much more enjoyable.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Altitude is one of the most important factors on the Renjo La Pass Trek.

As you ascend, the amount of available oxygen decreases. Some trekkers may experience symptoms associated with altitude sickness.

Possible symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, unusual tiredness, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.

More serious symptoms require immediate attention.

The best approach is prevention and careful monitoring.

During the trek:

  • Ascend gradually.
  • Stay properly hydrated.
  • Maintain a comfortable walking pace.
  • Eat regular meals.
  • Get adequate sleep.
  • Avoid overexertion.
  • Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell.
  • Follow your guide's instructions regarding altitude and itinerary changes.

Never hide symptoms from your guide simply because you want to continue.

Your safety is more important than reaching a particular destination on a particular day.

Best Seasons for Renjo La Pass Trek

The principal trekking seasons for the Renjo La Pass and Gokyo region are spring and autumn.

Spring – March to May

Spring is one of the most beautiful seasons in Nepal.

March, April, and May generally provide favorable trekking conditions, although mountain weather can change quickly.

Rhododendron forests at lower elevations may be in bloom, adding color to the landscape.

April and May are particularly attractive for trekkers who want a combination of mountain views and spring scenery.

Autumn – September to November

Autumn is traditionally one of Nepal's most popular trekking seasons.

After the monsoon, the atmosphere often becomes clearer, allowing excellent mountain visibility.

September, October, and November are excellent months for high-altitude trekking.

October is especially popular because of favorable weather and excellent mountain views.

December

December can also be possible for experienced trekkers who are prepared for cold temperatures.

Higher sections may become very cold, and snow conditions can affect the Renjo La crossing.

Winter – January and February

Winter is a challenging period.

Cold temperatures and snow can affect the high-pass route. Renjo La may become difficult or temporarily unsuitable depending on conditions.

Winter trips should therefore be planned carefully with experienced local guides and flexible schedules.

Monsoon – June to August

June, July, and August are generally less favorable for this route because of monsoon conditions in Nepal.

Rain, clouds, muddy trails, landslides, and transportation disruptions can affect the journey.

For the best overall experience, we generally recommend spring and autumn.

Accommodation During the Trek

Accommodation on the Renjo La route is primarily provided in mountain teahouses and lodges.

Rooms are generally simple and comfortable, with beds, mattresses, blankets, and basic furnishings.

Twin-sharing rooms are common.

Bathrooms may be shared, particularly at higher elevations.

As you climb higher into the Gokyo and Renjo La region, facilities become increasingly basic because of the remote environment.

Hot showers, Wi-Fi, charging, and other services may require additional payment.

Trekkers should carry a good sleeping bag suitable for cold mountain conditions, even when blankets are available in the lodges.

Food During the Renjo La Trek

Teahouses provide a variety of meals throughout the trekking route.

Common meals include:

  • Dal bhat
  • Rice
  • Vegetables
  • Noodles
  • Thukpa
  • Momo
  • Pasta
  • Fried rice
  • Potatoes
  • Porridge
  • Eggs
  • Pancakes
  • Bread
  • Soups
  • Tea
  • Coffee

Dal bhat is especially popular because it provides a filling combination of rice, lentils, vegetables, and other side dishes.

At higher elevations, food choices can become more limited because everything must be transported into remote mountain settlements.

We recommend eating enough nutritious food and staying hydrated throughout the trek.

Travel Insurance and Emergency Planning

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for the Renjo La Pass Trek.

Because the trek reaches more than 5,000 meters, travelers should make sure their policy covers trekking at the altitude they will reach.

Your insurance should ideally include emergency medical treatment and helicopter evacuation where applicable.

Before departure, check the policy carefully rather than assuming that every trekking or adventure activity is automatically covered.

Keep a copy of your insurance details and emergency contact information with you.

In an emergency, our trekking team can assist with coordination and communication with the relevant service providers.

Experienced trekkers can also consider combining Renjo La with other high-pass routes, subject to available time, seasonal conditions, and appropriate preparation.

For travelers seeking an even greater challenge, the Renjo La route can potentially be incorporated into a longer Everest high-pass itinerary.

Gokyo Lakes – A Major Attraction of the Trek

The Gokyo Lakes are among the highlights of this adventure.

These high-altitude glacial lakes sit in a dramatic Himalayan landscape beneath towering peaks.

The combination of turquoise water, rocky mountain slopes, glaciers, and snow-covered peaks creates an unforgettable environment.

The third Gokyo Lake is located beside Gokyo village, making the settlement one of the most spectacular overnight locations on the route.

From Gokyo Ri, the lakes can be viewed from a much higher perspective.

For photographers, nature lovers, and mountain enthusiasts, the Gokyo Valley can be one of the most memorable parts of the entire journey.

Renjo La Pass – The Ultimate Adventure

Crossing Renjo La is the defining experience of the trek.

The route requires a significant climb from the Gokyo side before reaching the pass.

At more than 5,000 meters, the combination of altitude and steep terrain can make the ascent demanding.

But once you reach the top, the effort becomes worthwhile.

The summit opens into a magnificent high-Himalayan panorama.

Take time to rest, enjoy the landscape, and photograph the surrounding peaks before beginning the descent.

Weather can change quickly at high altitude, so your guide will determine the safest time and route for crossing.

Sherpa Culture and Mountain Villages

The Renjo La route is not only about mountains.

It is also an opportunity to experience Sherpa culture.

Villages throughout the Khumbu region feature stone houses, Buddhist prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, monasteries, and traditional mountain lifestyles.

The Sherpa people have a long association with Himalayan trade, mountaineering, trekking, and tourism.

Respecting local customs is an important part of responsible trekking.

Always ask before photographing people, monasteries, or religious ceremonies.

Avoid damaging mani walls or religious objects, and follow local guidance when visiting monasteries.

Responsible and Sustainable Trekking

The Everest region is environmentally sensitive.

Every trekker has a responsibility to help protect the mountain environment.

We encourage travelers to:

  • Avoid single-use plastic whenever possible.
  • Carry reusable water bottles.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly.
  • Use designated toilets.
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Respect local culture.
  • Follow established trails.
  • Avoid unnecessary noise.
  • Respect monasteries and religious sites.
  • Support local lodges and businesses.

Our guides and porters can help trekkers follow responsible tourism practices throughout the journey.

Who Is Suitable for the Renjo La Pass Trek?

This trek is best suited to travelers who have good general fitness and are prepared for high-altitude walking.

Previous trekking experience is advantageous, particularly for people who have already completed multi-day mountain hikes.

However, previous experience on a 5,000-meter pass is not necessarily required if you are properly prepared and accompanied by an experienced guide.

The most important qualities are patience, fitness, preparation, and willingness to respect the mountain environment.

Begin Your Renjo La Adventure

Elevation: Namche 3,440m / 11,286ft
Distance: Approximately 3–5 km, depending on the excursion
Trekking Hours: 3–4 hours of optional hiking

Today is an important acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar. Rather than remaining completely inactive, you will take a short hike around the surrounding hills before returning to Namche to sleep at the same altitude.

Your guide may take you toward one of the nearby viewpoints from where you can enjoy panoramic mountain scenery. On a clear day, you may see peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kongde.

You can also visit the Sherpa Culture Museum and learn more about the traditions, history, mountaineering heritage, and lifestyle of the Sherpa communities.

Namche itself is worth exploring. Its narrow streets are lined with small shops, cafés, bakeries, trekking stores, and traditional houses. This is also a good opportunity to communicate with your guide about the upcoming higher-altitude sections.

The acclimatization day helps your body gradually adjust to increasing elevation before the trek continues toward Thame and Lungden.

Stay hydrated throughout the day and follow your guide's recommendations regarding activity and rest.

Lodge & Food: Overnight at the same lodge in Namche Bazaar. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included according to the trekking package.

Dole

Today you leave the busy trekking center of Namche Bazaar and follow a quieter trail toward Dole. This section takes you away from the main Everest Base Camp route and into a less crowded part of the Khumbu, giving you a more peaceful Himalayan trekking experience.

After breakfast, the trail gradually climbs above Namche. As you leave the settlement behind, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly open, allowing you to enjoy wide views of the mountains and valleys. The route passes through forests containing rhododendron, pine, and juniper trees, depending on elevation and local conditions.

One of the highlights of today's journey is the changing mountain scenery. You can expect views toward Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kangtega, and, under favorable weather conditions, distant views toward Everest and other Himalayan peaks. The trail itself offers many excellent photography opportunities.

The path follows the traditional highland route used by local communities and yak herders. You may encounter grazing yaks and mountain livestock along the way. Small settlements provide occasional places to stop for tea, lunch, or a short rest.

As the elevation increases, the vegetation gradually becomes less dense and the landscape takes on a more rugged alpine character. Your guide will encourage you to maintain a steady pace and take regular breaks rather than pushing yourself too hard.

After several hours of walking, you will reach Dole, a small mountain settlement surrounded by dramatic hills and snow-covered peaks. The village provides a peaceful overnight stop and an opportunity to experience the quieter side of the Everest region.

The increasing altitude makes it especially important to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exertion. After checking into your lodge, enjoy a warm meal and take time to relax.

The evening is an excellent opportunity to discuss the next day's route with your guide. As you continue higher toward Machhermo, the scenery will become increasingly dramatic and the air noticeably thinner.

Machhermo

Your journey continues deeper into the high Himalayas today as you trek from Dole to Machhermo. After breakfast, you will leave the settlement and follow a trail that gradually climbs through increasingly rugged terrain.

The landscape changes noticeably as you gain altitude. The dense lower-elevation forests become more scattered, while alpine shrubs, open hillsides, and rocky slopes become more prominent. Along the trail, you will encounter Buddhist stupas, mani stones, prayer flags, and small shrines that reflect the spiritual traditions of the Khumbu's mountain communities.

The route offers magnificent views of peaks such as Kangtega and Thamserku. As the valley opens up, you may also catch distant views toward Cho Oyu, one of the world's highest mountains. The combination of massive Himalayan peaks and peaceful high-altitude surroundings creates a truly memorable trekking environment.

Today's trail includes some steep and uneven sections, so your guide will establish a comfortable rhythm. Walking slowly and consistently is particularly important at this elevation. Frequent short breaks allow you to enjoy the landscape while conserving energy.

Along the way, the trail passes through settlements including Laphar and Luja. These small mountain communities demonstrate how people have adapted to life in the challenging high-altitude environment.

Eventually, Machhermo comes into view. The settlement is located in a broad alpine valley surrounded by impressive mountains. This area is associated with local Himalayan legends and is also an important stop for trekkers heading toward the Gokyo Valley.

After arriving at your lodge, you will have time to settle in and rest. Your guide will continue to monitor your adaptation to the altitude and provide advice about hydration, nutrition, and maintaining a healthy pace.

The evening is generally quiet, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings. A warm dinner and comfortable rest will prepare you for tomorrow's journey toward Gokyo, where turquoise glacial lakes and the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier await.

Gokyo Lake

Today is one of the most scenic days of the entire trek as you leave Machhermo and make your way toward the spectacular Gokyo Valley. After breakfast, you will follow the trail toward Phanga, passing through a rugged landscape shaped by glaciers, rock, and centuries of Himalayan weather.

The trail initially crosses a landslide-prone section before continuing toward the glacial lakes. You will cross a suspension bridge and begin ascending toward Longpongo Lake, situated at approximately 4,690 meters. The deep blue or turquoise color of the high-altitude water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding rocky terrain and snow-covered peaks.

From Longpongo, the trail continues toward the second and third Gokyo Lakes. The route gradually enters the moraine landscape of the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier, one of the major glaciers in the Everest region. Walking beside such a vast glacial environment gives you a remarkable sense of the scale and power of the Himalayas.

You will pass the first and second Gokyo Lakes before eventually reaching the beautiful third lake, beside which Gokyo village is located. The sight of the turquoise lake surrounded by mountains is one of the defining images of the trek.

Gokyo is a small settlement positioned beside the lake, with lodges providing shelter for trekkers and climbers. After arriving, you can have lunch and relax for a while.

Because today's trekking duration is relatively short, there may be time in the afternoon for optional exploration. Depending on weather, energy levels, and your guide's recommendation, you can walk toward the fourth and fifth Gokyo Lakes. These more remote lakes offer an even quieter experience and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.

Alternatively, you can simply rest beside the lake and enjoy the extraordinary landscape.

Tomorrow is dedicated to acclimatization and a challenging hike to Gokyo Ri, one of the finest viewpoints in the Everest region.

Hike to Gokyo Ri

Today is another important acclimatization day, but it is also one of the major highlights of your Himalayan adventure. The objective is Gokyo Ri, a renowned viewpoint rising high above the Gokyo Valley.

You will start after breakfast and begin climbing the steep, rocky trail toward the summit. Although the distance is not particularly long, the altitude makes the ascent physically demanding. Your guide will encourage you to move slowly, take regular breaks, and maintain a steady breathing rhythm.

As you climb higher, the views become increasingly spectacular. Looking back, Gokyo village and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes gradually appear smaller below. The surrounding mountains form a magnificent Himalayan panorama.

From the summit area of Gokyo Ri, you can enjoy views toward some of the most famous peaks in the region. Mount Everest dominates the horizon, while Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, and other snow-covered mountains create an extraordinary panorama. The views toward the Ngozumpa Glacier are equally impressive, revealing the immense scale of the glacial landscape.

Spend time at the viewpoint enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, but remember that conditions at this elevation can change quickly. Your guide will determine the appropriate time to descend according to weather and group conditions.

The descent to Gokyo is considerably easier than the climb, although care is still required on the rocky trail. Once back at the lodge, you can enjoy a warm meal and spend the remainder of the day resting.

This acclimatization day is strategically important because the next stage involves crossing Renjo La, one of the high passes of the trek. Spending additional time at altitude helps your body prepare for the challenging terrain ahead.

In the evening, your guide will brief you about the following day's crossing, including the expected walking duration, changing terrain, weather considerations, and the need for an early start.

Today is the most challenging and adventurous day of the trek as you cross the spectacular Renjo La Pass. An early start is recommended because the journey is long and involves a demanding high-altitude ascent.

After breakfast, you will leave Gokyo and gradually climb through a rugged alpine landscape. The trail becomes increasingly steep and rocky as you approach the pass. At this elevation, every step requires patience and controlled effort, so your guide will set a slow and steady pace.

As you climb toward Renjo La, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Behind you are the Gokyo Lakes and the enormous Ngozumpa Glacier, while the surrounding Himalayan peaks dominate the horizon. The final section to the pass can be physically demanding, particularly because of the altitude.

Upon reaching Renjo La Pass at approximately 5,345 meters, you will be rewarded with an extraordinary panorama. On a clear day, the viewpoint offers magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and numerous other Himalayan peaks. Take some time to appreciate the achievement and capture photographs, but remain mindful of the cold, wind, and high altitude.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends toward the remote valleys on the eastern side. The descent can be steep and rocky in places, requiring careful footing. As you lose elevation, the trail gradually becomes more manageable.

Eventually, you will arrive at Lungden, a peaceful settlement where you will spend the night. After the long day, a warm meal and proper rest will be especially welcome.

The Renjo La crossing is a defining experience of this trek because it combines physical challenge, remote mountain scenery, and breathtaking Himalayan views. Your experienced guide will support you throughout the day and monitor the group carefully.

Rest well tonight, as tomorrow you will begin descending toward the familiar surroundings of Namche Bazaar.

Day 10: Trek from Lungden to Namche Bazaar

After successfully crossing Renjo La Pass, today's trek takes you gradually back toward Namche Bazaar. The change in altitude makes today's journey feel considerably more comfortable, while the landscape gradually transitions from rugged alpine terrain toward greener mountain environments.

Leaving Lungden after breakfast, you will follow the traditional trail through the remote settlements of the upper Khumbu. Along the route, you will pass through Marlung, Thame, and Taranga, each offering glimpses into the traditional lifestyle of the Himalayan communities.

Thame is particularly notable for its beautiful mountain setting and strong connection with Sherpa culture and mountaineering history. The valley has long been an important route for traders and local communities traveling through the high passes.

As you continue, the trail gradually descends. The air becomes noticeably richer as you lose elevation, and vegetation begins to return. Forested sections provide welcome shade, while the surrounding hills and peaks remain impressive.

You will follow sections of the Bhote Koshi Valley before eventually reconnecting with the more established trekking routes around Namche. The walking is still substantial today, but the gradual descent generally makes it more comfortable than the previous high-pass crossing.

Along the way, there are opportunities to stop for tea and lunch at local lodges or settlements. Your guide will select suitable rest points according to the group's pace.

By the time you reach Namche Bazaar, the lively atmosphere of the town may feel familiar and welcoming. You will check into your lodge and have time to relax after the long journey.

You can spend the evening enjoying a warm meal, visiting a café, browsing local shops, or simply relaxing at the lodge. The return to Namche also marks an important transition: the most demanding high-altitude portion of your trek is now behind you.

Enjoy your final evening in the heart of the Khumbu before continuing toward Lukla tomorrow.

Today is your final full day of trekking in the Everest region. After breakfast, you will leave Namche Bazaar and retrace the trail toward Lukla, where the mountain journey began.

The trail initially descends through forests toward the lower parts of the Khumbu Valley. You will once again cross suspension bridges, pass traditional villages, and follow the Dudh Koshi River. Having already completed the higher sections of the trek, today's lower elevation should feel noticeably more comfortable.

As you walk, you can reflect on the experiences of the previous days—the first flight into Lukla, the climb to Namche, the tranquil Gokyo Lakes, the ascent of Gokyo Ri, and the demanding crossing of Renjo La Pass.

The route includes both descending and ascending sections, so today's distance should not be underestimated. Your guide will maintain a suitable pace and schedule regular breaks.

The surrounding forests provide beautiful scenery, particularly when the weather is clear. Depending on the season, you may see blooming rhododendrons, mountain birds, prayer flags, and traditional stone walls along the route.

You will pass through several settlements and continue toward Lukla. As you approach the town, the trail gradually becomes busier and more developed. Eventually, you will reach Lukla and check into your lodge.

After settling in, you can celebrate the completion of your trek with your guide and trekking team. This is a good time to express your appreciation to the local crew who supported you throughout the journey.

Enjoy your final evening among the Himalayan foothills. Prepare your bags for tomorrow's flight and keep your essential belongings easily accessible.

Your guide will confirm the morning flight arrangements and advise you about the departure schedule. Since mountain flights can sometimes be affected by weather, it is important to remain flexible.

The route takes you through the famous Namche Bazaar, beautiful Dudh Koshi valleys, Dole, Machhermo, Gokyo Valley, the sacred Gokyo Lakes, and finally across the challenging Renjo La Pass before descending through Lungden and the historic Sherpa village of Thame.

Unlike a conventional Everest Base Camp itinerary, the Renjo La route offers a genuine Himalayan pass-crossing experience. From the top of Renjo La, trekkers can enjoy breathtaking views toward Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, Gokyo Lakes, and the Ngozumpa Glacier.

The trek is physically demanding, particularly because of the altitude and the long pass-crossing day. However, it does not normally require technical mountaineering skills. With appropriate preparation, gradual acclimatization, a good trekking itinerary, and the support of an experienced guide, the Renjo La Pass Trek can become one of the most memorable adventures in Nepal.

What Makes Renjo La Pass Trek Special?

The Everest region is famous throughout the world for Everest Base Camp trekking, but the Khumbu contains many quieter and equally spectacular trails. The Renjo La Pass route is one of them.

Renjo La forms an important high-mountain connection between the Gokyo Valley and the Thame/Lungden area. The trail combines beautiful Himalayan scenery with a sense of remoteness that is increasingly difficult to find on the most popular trekking routes.

The route is also associated with the historical Himalayan trade corridor near Nangpa La. For generations, traders and yak caravans traveled between Tibet and the Khumbu, carrying commodities such as salt, wool and grain. Walking through the valleys around Thame and Lungden gives trekkers an opportunity to appreciate the historical relationship between mountain communities and trans-Himalayan trade.

The major attraction is undoubtedly the view from Renjo La. As you climb toward the pass, the surrounding landscape gradually becomes more dramatic. High ridges, glaciers and snow-covered peaks appear around you. Once you reach the top, the panorama opens dramatically toward the Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Lakes and the giant Himalayan peaks.

For travelers who want more than simply reaching Everest Base Camp, Renjo La provides a deeper trekking experience involving wilderness, culture, high-altitude landscapes and an authentic Himalayan pass.

Renjo La Pass Trek Route

The standard Renjo La loop is generally completed in a clockwise direction:

Lukla → Phakding → Namche Bazaar → Dole → Machhermo → Gokyo → Renjo La Pass → Lungden → Thame → Namche Bazaar → Lukla

This direction is particularly useful for acclimatization because trekkers gradually gain altitude before approaching the pass from the Gokyo side. The source itinerary recommends reaching Gokyo before the pass crossing and using time at high altitude to prepare for the 5,360-meter crossing.

A clockwise itinerary also allows trekkers to experience different landscapes each day rather than repeatedly walking the same trail.

The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Lukla, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi Valley toward Phakding and Namche Bazaar. After acclimatization around Namche, the route turns toward the quieter Gokyo Valley through Dole and Machhermo.

After exploring Gokyo and completing acclimatization activities, the major challenge begins: the ascent to Renjo La. The trail then descends to Lungden and continues through Thame before returning to Namche and Lukla.

Suggested 14-Day Renjo La Pass Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. Our Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks representative can meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.

After checking in, you can rest and recover from your international journey. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore the nearby streets of Thamel.

In the evening, our trekking team provides a briefing covering the route, permits, equipment, safety procedures and preparation for the Lukla flight.

Overnight: Kathmandu

Day 2: Kathmandu – Lukla – Phakding

The adventure begins with an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. The flight takes approximately 30–35 minutes under normal conditions.

Lukla is the gateway to the Everest region. After meeting the trekking crew and organizing your luggage, you begin walking through the Dudh Koshi Valley.

The trail passes through small settlements, forests and suspension bridges before reaching Phakding.

This is a relatively short trekking day and provides an excellent introduction to walking in the Khumbu.

Overnight: Phakding

Day 3: Phakding – Namche Bazaar

After breakfast, the trail continues north through beautiful mountain scenery.

You cross suspension bridges and enter Sagarmatha National Park. The route follows the Dudh Koshi River and gradually becomes steeper as you approach Namche.

Namche Bazaar is the commercial and cultural center of the Khumbu region. It is surrounded by impressive mountains and is an important stopping point for trekkers and mountaineers.

Overnight: Namche Bazaar

Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar

Acclimatization is an essential part of the Renjo La itinerary.

Rather than simply staying inside the lodge all day, an acclimatization day normally involves short walks at higher elevations before returning to Namche for the night.

You can explore the village, visit viewpoints, enjoy mountain scenery and learn more about the Sherpa culture of the region.

The purpose is to allow your body to gradually adapt to the decreasing oxygen levels.

Overnight: Namche Bazaar

Day 5: Namche Bazaar – Dole

Today the route leaves the main Everest Base Camp trail and follows a quieter trail toward Dole.

The landscape changes as the trail climbs through rhododendron and alpine vegetation. You will encounter fewer trekkers and enjoy a more peaceful Himalayan environment.

Dole is a small mountain settlement surrounded by dramatic peaks.

Overnight: Dole

Day 6: Dole – Machhermo

The trail continues upward toward Machhermo.

At these elevations, the vegetation becomes thinner and the mountains become increasingly dominant.

Machhermo is an important stop before entering the Gokyo Valley. Trekkers should walk slowly and maintain a comfortable pace because altitude is becoming a more significant factor.

Overnight: Machhermo

Day 7: Machhermo – Gokyo

Today you enter the beautiful Gokyo Valley.

The trail follows the valley toward the famous Gokyo Lakes. As you approach Gokyo, the landscape becomes increasingly spectacular, with glaciers, high mountains and turquoise lakes surrounding the settlement.

Gokyo is one of the most beautiful destinations in the Everest region.

Spend the evening relaxing at the teahouse and preparing for the following acclimatization activities.

Overnight: Gokyo

Day 8: Acclimatization and Exploration in Gokyo

Gokyo provides an important opportunity for acclimatization before crossing Renjo La.

Depending on the itinerary and weather, you can explore the surrounding area or climb Gokyo Ri, which reaches approximately 5,357 meters.

The climb provides extraordinary views across the Gokyo Valley and surrounding Himalayan peaks. After reaching the viewpoint, return to Gokyo for the night.

The principle is simple: climb higher during the day and return to sleep at a lower elevation.

Overnight: Gokyo

Day 9: Gokyo – Renjo La Pass – Lungden

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek.

You start early because the crossing involves a long day at high altitude. The trail climbs gradually at first before becoming steeper and more rugged.

As you approach Renjo La, the air becomes thin and the terrain increasingly rocky. The final ascent requires patience, controlled breathing and steady pacing.

Finally, you reach Renjo La Pass at 5,360 meters.

Take time to appreciate the extraordinary surroundings. Gokyo Lakes, glaciers and enormous Himalayan peaks form an unforgettable panorama.

After celebrating the achievement, begin the descent toward Lungden. The descent can be physically demanding because of loose stones and steep terrain.

Overnight: Lungden

Day 10: Lungden – Thame

After the demanding pass-crossing day, today's walk is more relaxed.

The trail continues through the remote Thame Valley toward Thame, one of the historic Sherpa settlements of the Khumbu.

Thame has a quieter atmosphere than Namche and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional mountain culture.

Overnight: Thame

Day 11: Thame – Namche Bazaar

Continue along the trail toward Namche Bazaar.

The landscape gradually changes as you descend. You will encounter more vegetation and warmer temperatures.

Arriving back in Namche provides a pleasant contrast after several days in the high mountains.

Enjoy a comfortable evening and celebrate the successful completion of Renjo La.

Overnight: Namche Bazaar

Day 12: Namche Bazaar – Lukla

The final trekking day takes you from Namche back toward Lukla.

Follow the Dudh Koshi Valley, crossing suspension bridges and passing through familiar villages.

Once you reach Lukla, you can relax with the trekking team and prepare for the return flight.

Overnight: Lukla

Day 13: Lukla – Kathmandu

Take the return flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, weather permitting.

After arriving in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for shopping, sightseeing or relaxing.

Overnight: Kathmandu

Day 14: Departure from Kathmandu

Your Renjo La adventure concludes today.

Our representative can assist you with your transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your international flight.

If your international schedule allows, you can also extend your stay in Nepal and explore Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan or other destinations.

The Renjo La Pass Crossing

Crossing Renjo La is the defining experience of the trek.

The approach from Gokyo gradually takes you into a high alpine environment. The trail becomes rockier and steeper, and the effects of altitude become increasingly noticeable.

The final climb should never be rushed. Walking slowly, taking controlled breaks and drinking enough water are important.

Once at the summit, trekkers are rewarded with one of the most impressive viewpoints in the Khumbu.

The descent requires equal attention. Loose stones and scree can make the trail slippery, particularly after snow or during poor weather. Trekking poles are highly recommended.

The route eventually descends toward Lungden, where trekkers can rest after the demanding crossing.

Renjo La Trek Difficulty

Renjo La Pass Trek is a strenuous high-altitude trek rather than a technical climbing expedition.

The main challenge is altitude. Renjo La rises above 5,300 meters, where the amount of available oxygen is considerably lower than at sea level. Even physically fit trekkers can experience breathlessness, fatigue and headaches at these elevations.

The pass-crossing day is the hardest part of the itinerary. The source material describes it as an approximately 8–10-hour day involving the ascent to 5,360 meters followed by a descent of more than 1,000 meters toward Lungden.

You should be comfortable walking for approximately 6–8 hours on uneven mountain terrain while carrying a daypack.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not always essential if you are physically prepared and follow a carefully designed acclimatization schedule.

Physical Preparation for Renjo La Pass

Preparation should begin several months before the trek.

Useful training includes:

  • Hiking
  • Walking uphill
  • Running
  • Cycling
  • Stair climbing
  • Leg-strength exercises
  • Core-strength exercises
  • Long weekend hikes
  • Training with a light backpack

The goal is not simply to become fast. The goal is to develop endurance and the ability to walk steadily for several hours.

Training should also include downhill walking because the descent from Renjo La can place significant stress on the knees.

A useful preparation target is being able to walk for 6–8 hours over uneven terrain while carrying a 5–8 kg daypack.

Acclimatization and Altitude Safety

Altitude acclimatization is one of the most important factors in a successful Renjo La trek.

Our itinerary allows gradual elevation gain and includes time for acclimatization at Namche and Gokyo.

Common altitude-related symptoms can include:

  • Mild headache
  • Reduced appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty sleeping

More serious symptoms require immediate attention. Confusion, vomiting, difficulty walking normally, persistent severe headache, or breathing problems should never be ignored.

If symptoms worsen, descending is the safest response.

Drink plenty of water throughout the trek, eat regular meals and avoid alcohol at high altitude.

Medication such as acetazolamide may be used by some trekkers, but it should only be taken after consulting an appropriate medical professional.

Safety and Emergency Support

Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks places strong emphasis on responsible trekking and safety.

Our trekking guides monitor the group throughout the journey, particularly during high-altitude sections.

Travel insurance is essential. Your insurance should specifically cover:

  • High-altitude trekking
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Helicopter evacuation
  • Trip interruption or modification

Weather can change rapidly in the high mountains. If heavy snowfall, strong winds or poor visibility makes the pass unsafe, the guide may recommend changing the itinerary.

No trekking schedule is more important than safety.

Best Time for Renjo La Pass Trek

The best seasons are generally spring and autumn.

Spring – March to May

Spring is an excellent season for the Renjo La Pass Trek.

Lower valleys become colorful with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. The weather is generally favorable and mountain visibility is often excellent.

April and May are particularly popular.

The Gokyo and Renjo La route can still feel considerably quieter than the main Everest Base Camp trail.

Autumn – September to November

Autumn is widely considered one of the best trekking seasons in Nepal.

The monsoon has cleared much of the dust and haze from the atmosphere, resulting in sharp mountain views and blue skies.

October and November are especially popular among photographers and mountain lovers.

Temperatures become colder at night as November progresses, so appropriate warm clothing is important.

Winter – December to February

Winter trekking is possible but requires greater flexibility.

Heavy snowfall can make the pass difficult or temporarily inaccessible. January is particularly cold.

Trekkers choosing winter should be experienced, properly equipped and prepared for itinerary changes.

Monsoon – June to August

The monsoon season is generally not recommended for Renjo La.

Rain, cloud, slippery trails and poor mountain visibility can make the journey more difficult.

Accommodation During Renjo La Pass Trek

The trek uses traditional Himalayan teahouses and lodges.

Accommodation varies according to altitude and village.

Namche, Phakding and Gokyo generally offer some of the more comfortable lodges on the route, with proper beds, dining rooms and better access to facilities.

Dole and Machhermo provide simpler accommodation.

Above Machhermo, facilities become increasingly basic because transporting supplies to high-altitude settlements is difficult.

Lungden is among the most basic overnight stops. Trekkers should expect simple rooms, limited food choices and fewer modern facilities.

This is part of the character of a remote Himalayan trek rather than a problem with the destination.

Rooms are generally shared depending on availability and group arrangements. A sleeping bag is strongly recommended for the colder high-altitude nights.

Food During the Renjo La Trek

Teahouses serve a variety of nutritious meals.

Typical breakfast choices include:

  • Porridge
  • Tibetan bread
  • Eggs
  • Muesli
  • Pancakes
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Hot lemon

Lunch and dinner commonly include:

  • Dal bhat
  • Momo
  • Thukpa
  • Fried rice
  • Pasta
  • Potato dishes
  • Vegetable soup
  • Garlic soup
  • Pizza where available

Dal bhat is particularly useful for trekkers because it provides carbohydrates, protein and vegetables.

Vegetarian and vegan meals can generally be arranged along the route. Gluten-free diets may require additional preparation, particularly at higher elevations.

We recommend eating sufficient carbohydrates and drinking plenty of fluids.

Alcohol should be avoided at high altitude because it can interfere with hydration and acclimatization.

Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Valley

The Gokyo Valley is one of the major attractions of the Renjo La Pass Trek.

The valley is famous for a series of beautiful glacial lakes surrounded by enormous Himalayan peaks.

The turquoise and deep-blue colors of the lakes contrast dramatically with the rocky mountain landscape.

Gokyo also provides access to Gokyo Ri, an excellent viewpoint for trekkers seeking an even broader panorama.

The combination of lakes, glaciers, mountains and traditional Himalayan settlements makes the Gokyo Valley an unforgettable part of the journey.

Himalayan Views from Renjo La

Renjo La provides exceptional views of some of the world's highest mountains.

Depending on weather and visibility, trekkers can see:

  • Mount Everest
  • Lhotse
  • Nuptse
  • Cho Oyu
  • Gokyo Lakes
  • Ngozumpa Glacier
  • Surrounding peaks and ridges of the Khumbu

The perspective from Renjo La is one of the reasons experienced trekkers choose this route.

Rather than simply walking toward one destination, the trek creates a complete Himalayan circuit through several different valleys.

Sherpa Culture and Traditions

The Renjo La route passes through the homeland of the Sherpa people.

Sherpa communities have a strong connection with Tibetan Buddhism. Their traditions can be seen throughout the trekking route.

You will encounter:

  • Mani walls
  • Prayer wheels
  • Chortens
  • Prayer flags
  • Monasteries
  • Buddhist shrines
  • Traditional mountain homes

When passing mani walls and chortens, trekkers should follow local customs and walk in the appropriate direction.

Prayer flags are commonly seen around villages and mountain passes. Their colors represent different elements and carry Buddhist prayers into the environment through the wind.

Visitors should always ask permission before photographing inside monasteries or during religious ceremonies.

Thame Village

Thame is one of the cultural highlights of the Renjo La route.

Compared with Namche Bazaar, Thame is quieter and retains a strong traditional atmosphere.

The village sits within the historic Thame Valley and has long been connected with trans-Himalayan trade.

For trekkers, staying in Thame provides a chance to experience a different side of the Everest region away from the busier trekking corridors.

Renjo La vs Cho La Pass

Both Renjo La and Cho La are major high passes in the Everest region, but they provide different experiences.

Renjo La – 5,360 m

  • Connects the Gokyo region with Thame/Lungden
  • Quieter route
  • Exceptional Gokyo and Everest views
  • Generally less technical
  • Excellent for trekkers seeking solitude

Cho La – 5,420 m

  • Connects Gokyo with the Everest Base Camp side
  • More popular
  • Can involve steeper and icier terrain
  • Often included in the Everest Three Passes Trek

Renjo La is particularly attractive for travelers who prioritize scenery, tranquility and a high-pass experience without completing all three major Everest passes.

Renjo La vs Everest Base Camp Trek

The classic Everest Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal's most famous trekking routes.

Renjo La provides a different experience.

EBC focuses on reaching Everest Base Camp and experiencing famous landmarks such as Namche, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep and Base Camp.

Renjo La focuses more strongly on high-pass trekking, Gokyo Lakes, glaciers, remote valleys and Sherpa culture.

Trekkers who have already completed EBC may find Renjo La particularly rewarding because it offers a new perspective on the Everest region.

Renjo La vs Everest Three Passes Trek

The Everest Three Passes Trek combines:

  • Renjo La
  • Cho La
  • Kongma La

It is a longer and more demanding circuit.

Renjo La Pass Trek is a good alternative for trekkers who want to experience a major Himalayan pass without committing to a complete three-pass expedition.

It provides many of the essential elements of a high-altitude Khumbu adventure while requiring fewer trekking days.

Optional Gokyo Ri and Other Peaks

Trekkers with additional time and sufficient energy can consider optional climbs around the route.

Gokyo Ri, at approximately 5,357 meters, is one of the most popular viewpoints in the region.

The route information also identifies optional peaks around Thame and Lungden, including Lungden Peak and Sundar Peak. These options should only be attempted when weather, fitness, acclimatization and guide assessment are favorable.

Additional days can be added for trekkers who want a slower itinerary or more time for exploration.

Lukla Flight Information

The Renjo La trek normally begins and ends with a flight between Kathmandu and Lukla.

Flights take approximately 30–35 minutes under normal conditions.

However, Lukla flights are highly dependent on weather.

Fog, cloud, wind and visibility can result in delays or cancellations. For this reason, trekkers should always maintain flexibility around their Lukla flight dates.

Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks recommends keeping a buffer day before an international departure whenever possible.

In case of prolonged flight disruption, alternative transportation arrangements may be discussed depending on current conditions and availability.

Porter Service and Baggage

A porter can make the Renjo La trek considerably more comfortable by carrying your main luggage.

The supplied source recommends a combined porter load of approximately 20 kg for two trekkers, or about 10 kg per person. This approach also helps reduce excessive loads carried by porters in the high Himalayas.

Your daypack should contain only the items you need during the day, such as:

  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Camera
  • Phone
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Headlamp
  • Extra layer
  • Gloves
  • Personal medication
  • Trekking poles

Your main duffel can contain your sleeping bag, spare clothes, down jacket and other equipment that you do not need during the day.

Packing light is one of the best ways to make the trek more comfortable.

Renjo La Trek Packing List

A suitable packing list should include:

Clothing

  • Moisture-wicking base layers
  • Fleece jacket
  • Down jacket
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Trekking trousers
  • Warm hat
  • Sun hat
  • Gloves
  • Thermal underwear
  • Trekking socks

Footwear

  • Comfortable trekking boots
  • Camp shoes or sandals
  • Extra socks

Trekking Equipment

  • Sleeping bag
  • Trekking poles
  • Headlamp
  • Water bottles
  • Water purification tablets or filter
  • Backpack
  • Duffel bag
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Personal first-aid supplies

Electronics

  • Phone
  • Camera
  • Power bank
  • Charging cables
  • Spare batteries where necessary

Keep electronic devices warm when temperatures are very low because cold conditions can reduce battery performance.

A Typical Day on the Renjo La Trek

A normal trekking day starts early.

Breakfast is generally served around 6:30 am, with departure commonly around 7:00–7:30 am.

The pace is intentionally slow. In Nepal, trekkers often hear the phrase “bistari bistari,” meaning “slowly slowly.”

Most trekking days involve approximately 4–7 hours of walking, although the Renjo La crossing requires substantially more effort.

Breaks are taken regularly depending on the altitude, terrain and needs of the group.

Lunch is generally eaten at a teahouse along the trail.

On ordinary days, trekkers usually reach the overnight lodge during the early or middle afternoon. The additional time allows the body to rest and adapt to altitude.

Evenings are spent in the dining room, where trekkers can eat, talk with guides and fellow travelers, charge devices where available, and prepare for the next day.

Permits Required for Renjo La Pass Trek

Two main permits are required for the standard Renjo La route.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

The trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park, so trekkers require a national park entry permit.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

This is a local government permit required for trekking in the Khumbu region.

Permit fees and regulations can change, so Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks confirms the applicable requirements before departure.

Trekkers should carry their passports during the journey because documents may be checked along the trail.

Responsible and Sustainable Trekking

The Everest region receives thousands of visitors every year, so responsible trekking is important.

We encourage trekkers to:

  • Carry reusable water bottles
  • Reduce plastic waste
  • Use water purification systems
  • Avoid littering
  • Respect local customs
  • Avoid unnecessary single-use plastic
  • Support local teahouses and businesses
  • Ask before photographing local people
  • Avoid giving money or sweets directly to children
  • Respect monasteries and religious sites

The Renjo La route is remote, and waste management becomes increasingly difficult at higher elevations. Every trekker has a responsibility to help protect the Himalayan environment.

Internet, Mobile Network and Charging

Mobile and internet access becomes increasingly limited as you move farther into the high mountains.

Namche generally has better connectivity, while coverage becomes less reliable around the higher villages and remote valleys.

Many teahouses provide Wi-Fi for an additional charge, but speeds vary considerably.

Charging electronics may also cost extra at mountain lodges.

We strongly recommend carrying a power bank so that your phone, camera and emergency communication devices remain functional.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is an essential requirement for a high-altitude trek such as Renjo La.

Your policy should clearly cover trekking at elevations above 5,000 meters and emergency helicopter evacuation.

Do not assume that every standard travel insurance policy covers high-altitude trekking.

Read your policy carefully before departure and confirm that the altitude limit and evacuation provisions are suitable for the Renjo La route.

Who Should Choose the Renjo La Pass Trek?

This trek is particularly suitable for:

  • Experienced trekkers
  • Physically fit adventure travelers
  • Photographers
  • Mountain lovers
  • Travelers who prefer quieter trails
  • Trekkers who want to experience Gokyo Lakes
  • Travelers looking for a high-altitude pass crossing
  • People who have already completed Everest Base Camp
  • Trekkers interested in Sherpa culture and Himalayan history
  • Adventurers who want an alternative to the standard EBC route

It may not be the best choice for travelers who are completely new to high-altitude trekking and have little time to prepare.

Private or Group Renjo La Pass Trek

Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks can arrange the Renjo La Pass Trek as a private or customized group experience.

A private trek provides greater flexibility. Walking speed, rest days, accommodation preferences and additional exploration days can be adjusted according to the group.

A group trek allows travelers to share the experience with other adventure enthusiasts.

Solo travelers can also arrange private trekking support with a guide and porter.

Why Trek with Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks?
