Budhanilkantha, located in the northern part of Kathmandu, Nepal, is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites. It is home to the famous Sleeping Vishnu Temple, where a giant stone statue of Lord Vishnu reclines on a bed of serpent coils. This sacred site attracts thousands of devotees and tourists seeking spiritual blessings and a glimpse of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage.
The name "Budhanilkantha" means "Old Blue Throat," referring to Lord Vishnu. According to legend, the 5-meter-long statue, carved from a single basalt stone, dates back to the Licchavi period (5th–7th century AD). It depicts Lord Vishnu in his cosmic sleep on the serpent Ananta, floating on the primordial ocean. It is believed that no Nepali king can visit the temple, as an old prophecy states that doing so would lead to his downfall.
