In the heart of the Everest Region, where towering peaks paint the skyline with majesty, lies the Thonak La Pass Trek—an exhilarating new adventure route that unveils the untamed beauty of the Himalayas. Led by the seasoned Binod of Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks and Expedition Pvt. Ltd, our journey began with the establishment of a base at Sumna Phu, a serene haven nestled beneath the formidable Thonak La Pass.
The trail unfolds to the east, offering breathtaking views of Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Ama Dablam, and Makalu, extending its reach to the gorge of the mighty Arun River. On the opposite horizon, the Rolwaling Himalayas, adorned with Gauri Sankar and Melungtse, rise with an air of mystery, inviting intrepid souls to explore their secrets.
Ascending to an impressive 6416 meters, Thonak La Pass stands as the pinnacle of this trek, a gateway to the surreal landscapes that await. As we crossed this high pass, a tapestry of adventures unfolded, weaving a narrative of challenge and triumph against the backdrop of unbelievable vistas. Mt. Everest, an icon in its solitude, graced us with its awe-inspiring presence, accompanied by a symphony of lesser-known peaks that whispered tales of ancient times.
The Thonak La Pass Trek is not merely a traverse through the Himalayas; it is a journey through the pages of history, a route that once served as a conduit between the bustling trade junctions of Tibet and Nepal. The trail winds through the enchanting Thame Valley, revealing the quaint villages of Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Thame, each echoing the rich cultural tapestry of the Sherpa people.
Sumna Phu, an ethereal Sherpa village, became our haven as we prepared to conquer the challenge that lay ahead. Crossing Thonak La Pass was not just a physical feat but a spiritual communion with the towering giants that guard these lands. As we descended towards Gokyo Lakes, the serenity of the landscape mirrored the tranquility within.
The Himalayan loop, embracing the colossal peaks of Cho Oyo, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, cast its enchantment upon us. Ancient trails, some well-trodden like the path to Renjo La Pass, and others, like the trail through Thonak La, known primarily to Tibetan monks and traders, stitched together the remote valleys beneath these giants.
Thonak La Pass Trek isn't just an adventure; it's a passage through time and terrain, an odyssey where the echoes of the past harmonize with the grandeur of the present. Join us as we navigate the unexplored, where every step is a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration and a salute to the unparalleled beauty that is the Himalayas.

CIRCUIT GOKYO ~ CONNECTING NANGPA, GOKYO, THAMCHO VALLEY ~ NEPAL, MAY 2023 What happens when you successfully explore a new col, when you connect another known pass with it to connect three valleys and make a circuit trek, when you trek through a virgin route and valley and view and capture some breathtaking sights, with excellent landscapes, towering Himalayan peaks of Nepal and Tibet, adventurous trek route, crossing a new col, flora, and fauna, get to meet some world-famous sherpas (some ... See more who have climbed Mt. Everest 22 times and all the 14 eight thousand peaks), know about the local habitats ?? ~ it was something which will be cherished for long. Above all, when the highest authority of Nepal Trekking and Expedition, TAAN (Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal) acknowledges us with an appreciation certificate for our exploration, the joy is much sweeter. Along with Partha Sarathi Moulik, with the able guidance and support of Mr. Binod Karki (he was with us who guided) of Himalayan Adventure Intl Treks and one porter, we self-supported and conducted with GPS and map, successfully explored and crossed a new col, for the first time ~ THONAK LA (5416 m), on 29th May 2023, which connects Nangpa Valley with Gokyo Valley, to reach Thonak Tso and then Gokyo Lake. This col is not so technically difficult to cross from Nangpa to Gokyo Valley as the other passes in the nearby area, which are technical. Then trek from Gokyo Lake to Thamcho Valley by crossing the known Renjo Pass (5435 m) on 31st May 2023. Thus, we connected the three beautiful valleys of the Khumbu area in Nepal, namely Nangpa, Gokyo, and Thamcho Valley in a circuit named GOKYO CIRCUIT. Thamcho and Nangpa Valley are less visited, Becoz, only when a few trekkers complete two passes Tashi Lapcha which ends at Thame, and Renjo Pass which ends at Lungden and Thame. Nangpa Valley is hardly visited. Thus, this beautiful, adventurous but much easier trek route can attract many trekkers tourists in the future. Our route was Salleri ~ Thamdanda (jeep) ~ Paiya, Chheubas ~ Phakding ~ Namche Bazar ~ Thame ~ Lungden ~ Sumna Phu ~ cross new col Thonak La ~ Thonak Tso ~ Gokyo ~ cross Renjo Pass ~ Lungden (lunch) ~ Thame Teng ~ Namche Bazar ~ Lukla ~ Kathmandu See less...
